Window Seat Series: South Africa 2008

Crisscrossing South Africa by plane I always requested a window seat. From this cozy perch I used my camera to capture the topography below. My lens focused on curlicuing rivers, hippo ponds, stacked shanty towns, frothy ocean coast line, stretches of savannah and colorful quilt-like vegetation patterns. Upon return to my studio in Colorado I used these aerial images to jump start my art making process. My technique is to paint in multiple layers with pigmented warm wax and then to scrap back into the wax removing top layers to reveal what is below.
